A study by Warren and Halpern-Manners (2012) on panel conditioning in longitudinal studies noted that repeated participation could lead to improved understanding of survey questions and instructions, potentially reducing measurement error initially.

This aligns with the intuitive notion that experienced panelists are more comfortable with survey formats, leading to fewer errors and dropouts. This strongly suggests that a substantial portion of experienced respondents are compromising data quality.

Further research by Chandler et al. (2014) on Amazon Mechanical Turk (a crowdsourcing platform often used for surveys) found evidence of “respondent fatigue” and “learning effects,” where frequent participants become adept at identifying desired responses, leading to biases like social desirability bias (answering in a way they believe is socially acceptable) and acquiescence bias (agreeing with statements regardless of content). A crucial study by Eyal, et al.(2021), they found that up to 25% of Prolific Academic sample had likely lied about at least one exclusion criteria and nearly 10% of the respondents had likely responded dishonestly to at least one attention check question.

These figures highlight the very real threat posed by dishonest and inattentive respondents, a significant portion of whom are likely “professionals.”

Panel Conditioning vs. Professional Respondents: A Crucial Distinction

Panel conditioning refers to changes in responses within a single, longitudinal study due to repeated exposure to the same questions and instruments.
